A big challenge for most local gardeners is how to have a beautiful, cooling landscape that uses very little water and is fire resilient. A special teaching and learning event hosted by Sonoma Ecology Center and Ag + Open Space at Sonoma Garden Park will grapple with this idea and bring to light many solutions, from native plant species to coordinating a plan with the lay of the land. Participants will get a hands-on introduction to plants for various uses, such as xeriscaping, attracting pollinators, fire hardiness or adding color. You’ll leave ready to beautify a garden with water-wise California native plants. The workshop includes a tour of the Native Plant Nursery, and a make-and-take native plant related activity.

Sonoma Garden Park was protected by Ag + Open Space in November of 2011 for recreation and preservation of its natural resources, and learning classroom environment for agriculture field trips for nearby elementary schools through Sonoma Ecology Center’s “Growing Discovery” program. The 6-acre property, hidden in eastern Sonoma, is an incredible public park and working garden site in Sonoma Valley, containing a wide array of habitats alongside sustainably designed systems for both agriculture use and landscaping purposes.

There is no charge for this outing, which is made possible by the voters of Sonoma County who fund the work of  Ag + Open Space with a quarter-cent sales tax.
