Rosie was raised in Sonoma County and attended Sonoma State University obtaining her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a concentration in Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation. Her love of animals has taken her from studying Spinner Dolphins on the Big Island of Hawaii, to studying sloths in the jungles of Panama, to being a docent at the Seattle Aquarium. Rosie has two dogs, Barley and Pam; she loves creating art and is a true crime aficionado.
What’s your favorite Sonoma County place to get outside and why?
We are lucky to have so many incredible options here in Sonoma County to enjoy this beautiful area, but Jenner Headlands is one of my favorites. It is rare to find dog-friendly well-maintained hiking spots with miles and miles of trails…and it’s free!
What’s one fact, statistic, or interesting tidbit about land conservation that you enjoy sharing with others?
One of my favorite facts about land conservation is that for every acre of protected land, up to 60,000 gallons of water can be filtered and cleaned by the natural ecosystems within that land. This highlights just how vital conserved lands are—not only for biodiversity but also for providing clean water, improving air quality, and mitigating the effects of climate change. It’s incredible to think that every acre we protect plays such a crucial role in sustaining our planet’s health.
What’s your proudest moment working in land conservation and why?
So far, the proudest moment in land conservation has been accepting the opportunity to be part of Ag + Open Space. The legacy and lasting impact of the work that has been done—and will continue to do—here in Sonoma County fills me with immense pride. I often reflect on the words of Fred Rogers, who shared a story from his childhood. When he saw scary things on the news, his mother would say, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” To this day, especially during times of crisis, I find comfort in knowing there are always helpers in the world. I am proud to be one of those helpers—protecting the land, contributing to a legacy of conservation, and knowing that my work truly matters.
What compelled you to pick a career in land conservation?
Being a 5th-generation Californian from Sebastopol, I spent my childhood exploring coastal beaches, redwoods, and oak woodlands. These experiences instilled in me a deep love for Sonoma County’s natural beauty and its unique ecosystems. My passion for land conservation stems from the desire to protect these landscapes for future generations, ensuring others can explore and connect with the land as I did. It’s a privilege to contribute to preserving these natural treasures, and this drives my dedication to conservation every day.
What’s your favorite ice cream flavor and why?
My favorite is Mimi’s Mud at Screamin’ Mimi’s in Sebastopol…if you’ve not tried it, it’s a MUST! Espresso ice cream with Oreo cookies and homemade fudge. It has all the good things.
