Cooley Ranch
Cooley Ranch is located off of Cooley Ranch Road five miles west of Cloverdale, CA, in unincorporated portions of Sonoma and Mendocino Counties. The conservation easement encompasses a total of 19,131. 82 acres of land, 10, 677 acres of which are in Sonoma County and 8, 454 acres in Mendocino County.
The Conservation Easement grant agreement between the Cooley Ranch Company and Ag + Open Space was approved by the District Board of Directors on July 10, 2001. At over 19,000 acres, Cooley Ranch is one of the largest privately-held cattle ranches in northwestern California. It is comprised predominantly of grazing lands, natural habitats and scenic vistas. It includes diverse plant communities including grasslands, chaparral, oak savannah, mixed hardwood forests, Douglas fir and redwood forests, perennial, and seasonal riparian streams. The Ranch includes several miles of Dry Creek, a Sonoma County General Plan designated Riparian Corridor, as well as major portions of its tributaries, including Soda, McChristian, Rail, Buckeye, Boulder and Galloway Creeks. The Ranch provides habitat for river otters, as well as nesting pairs 6 of peregrine falcons and golden eagles. It contains at least one rare and endangered plant species, Tracyina rostrata, or beaked Tracyina. More information on the Ranch’s history can be found here >>
