Southeast Greenway Project Honored for Land Acquisition Success
We’re proud to celebrate a major milestone in the journey of the Southeast Greenway – a project that just received the Merit Award for Acquisition from the California Council of the American Society of Landscape Architects! This prestigious award recognizes the collaborative efforts that have brought this transformative project closer to reality, with Ag + Open Space as a proud partner.
The award honors the Greenway’s land acquisition phase, which culminated in 2023 after more than a decade of planning and community visioning. Ag + Open Space supported this critical step through our Community Spaces Matching Grant Program, awarding $1 million to the City of Santa Rosa to help fund pre-acquisition work. That support helped pave the way for the purchase of 47 acres of former Caltrans freeway land – land that is now set to become a vibrant corridor for people, plants and wildlife.
The Southeast Greenway is more than just a park. It’s a visionary project that will connect Spring Lake Regional Park to Santa Rosa’s urban core with trails, green spaces, restored habitat, and community gathering areas. It’s the result of a powerful partnership between local agencies, nonprofits, and community members – and it’s exactly the kind of project that embodies Ag + Open Space’s mission to protect land for the benefit of all Sonoma County residents.
We are honored to share in this award and excited to see what comes next for this incredible community-driven initiative.
