A new all-weather soccer field at Tom Schopflin Fields Regional Park is moving closer to reality, advancing the final planned field-development phase of the park’s long-standing Master Plan. The project will expand year-round recreational access, help address Sonoma County’s shortage of playable sports fields, and create more opportunities for youth and community soccer.

A Regional Park Built in Phases

Tom Schopflin Fields is a 21-acre County Regional Park located along Old Redwood Highway, north of Santa Rosa, within the community separator. Ag + Open Space purchased the property in 1996 and transferred it to Sonoma County Regional Parks in 2000 for development as a planned playing-field site.

The property has been developed gradually through grant funding, park mitigation fees, and private contributions. Today, the park includes:

  • A multi-use baseball and soccer field
  • Two all-weather soccer fields, commonly known as Trione Fields
  • A concession building and restrooms
  • Parking and a paved walking trail
  • A restored wetland
  • Approximately 4.5 acres of undeveloped area planned for the final field phase

The first phase of the park opened in 2002 with a multi-use soccer and baseball field and adjacent parking. While an additional combined-use field was initially envisioned, the Board of Supervisors approved a change in 2006 to develop two all-weather soccer fields instead, responding to the community’s growing demand for soccer facilities. Sonoma Soccer Complex financed and constructed those fields and operates them under a 25-year lease with the County.

Advancing the Final Master Plan Phase

The remaining undeveloped area was identified in a 2017 conceptual plan update for a change in field type. Regional Parks completed environmental review at that time and found no significant changes to the project or its circumstances from the original Tom Schopflin Fields Master Plan, which the Board of Supervisors adopted in 1999.

On March 18, 2025, the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors approved a lease agreement with Atlético, a nonprofit soccer academy, for construction, operation, and maintenance of a new all-weather soccer field at the park.

The new field will support public recreation while helping meet the need for reliable, year-round practice and playing space. As a durable all-weather facility, it can expand opportunities for organized youth soccer, community programs, and casual recreation when natural-grass fields may be unavailable because of weather or maintenance needs.

Community Spaces Partnership

Atlético submitted the Tom Schopflin Fields Phase 2 proposal during the 2024 Community Spaces funding cycle. On December 10, 2024, Ag + Open Space’s Board of Directors accepted the application with a recommended improvement grant of $993,342.

The project is a partnership among Atlético, Sonoma County Regional Parks, and Ag + Open Space.
