Meet the newest addition to our grants team, Samantha! She grew up in Sonoma County and attended the University of Portland where she earned degrees in Political Science and Spanish, with an emphasis in environmental studies. After spending a year teaching in Spain, she transitioned back to the Bay Area and worked for a local lobbying firm and then took a position in Government Affairs for the California Academy of Sciences where she spent the last five years before joining Ag + Open Space.
What’s your favorite Sonoma County place to get outside and why?
Doran Beach is my favorite place to get outside in Sonoma County. I love walking along the beach with our dogs and enjoying the scenic views. For me, the beach is always my happy place regardless of the time of year.
What’s one fact, statistic, or interesting tidbit about land conservation that you enjoy sharing with others?
Land conservation is one important tool in the fight against climate change. Conservation promotes healthy, biodiverse ecosystems and, in turn, benefits all living beings.
What’s your proudest moment working in land conservation and why?
Joining Ag + Open Space has been my proudest moment. I feel so lucky to serve the community I grew up in and be a part of an organization that conserves and fosters the beautiful landscapes we call home. Ag + Open Space combines my career and my passion for the environment and I am grateful to be able to work for a mission I believe in.
What compelled you to pick a career in land conservation?
Growing up in Petaluma, I spent a lot of time outside and developed my love for the outdoors. In high school, I read a combination of books, including Silent Spring, and from there I knew I wanted to have a career in environmentalism.
What’s your favorite ice cream flavor and why?
When it’s available, Pots of Gold and Rainbows from Salt and Straw is my absolute favorite flavor of ice cream. It combines a not-too-sweet cereal-flavored ice cream with Lucky Charms marshmallows and it is the perfect balance of deliciousness.
