What' s New at the District ?  Paulin Creek Open Space Preserve

Extraordinary Resources Protected

The District recently assisted in the purchase of 27 acres of amazing biodiversity that is very visible from Gravenstein Highway between Graton and Forestville. The only known colony of white sedge grows here along with a highly valuable mix of habitat types, from riparian woodland and thicket, to freshwater marsh, and wet meadow. A partnership between the Sonoma Land Trust, Department of Fish and Game, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, State Coastal Conservancy and the District made this possible. What was once destined to be a 29-bed nutritional facility will now be held by Sonoma Land Trust, and the District will retain an easement over this amazing jewel.

General Manager in National Program

Andrea Mackenzie, General Manager of the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District, recently received word that she has been selected as a Fellow in the National Conservation Leadership Institute (NCLI). This nationwide program engages leaders in dialogue to advance the leadership capacity of those on the forefront of conservation work in the country. The year-long program involves both classroom and online instruction and, very importantly, opportunities to apply and use the learning in real situations.

Future Open Space Preserve on Cloverdale' s Edge

A two hundred and forty-nine acre mosaic of upland oak forest, mixed evergreen forest, grasslands, chaparral, some seasonal wetland and the south branch of Porterfield Creek has been protected on the western flank of Cloverdale. This land was on its way to becoming the last addition to an extensive subdivision when its owners began having discussions with the District. Now the very visible greenbelt area is protected and the city of Cloverdale and Regional Parks are discussing public access.

Don' t Forget!!

The Executive Summary of the District's long-term acquisition plan, Connecting Communities and the Land, is now available. Call our Office (707-565-7360) for a copy. It has been designed for one side to be used as a poster.
