During the past ten years the District has been working with willing landowners to preserve Taylor Mountain, the stunning backdrop to Santa Rosa. By 2007, an interim access plan should be in place to welcome the public to Taylor Mountain Open Space Preserve, a beautiful area that offers many inviting hikes and spectacular vistas in every direction. In the spring, wildflowers abound and the combination of meadows, oak woodlands and several wetlands and springs provide habitat for a wide variety of wildlife and bird species—a fantastic spot for bird watching! Taylor Mountain also has a rich farming and cultural heritage dating back to 1876. The public is invited to participate in a community planning process to decide the long-term development of this dramatic natural and historic resource so close to the city. (Created by four separate District acquisitions: Bath/Watt, Matteri, Nunes and Taylor Mountain properties.)
