Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District

Sonoma Mountain Open Space Preserve

This series of four properties (flanking a fifth purchased by County Regional Parks) create a chain of protected land across the north side of Sonoma Mountain that connects to Jack London State Park. Jacob’s Ranch is a vast mosaic of diverse plant communities. Its open grasslands rise to 1500 feet. The former owner’s family picnic area resides in a beautiful redwood grove not far from well-kept ranch buildings. Cooper’s Grove protects one of the last and largest remaining redwood groves in the area. The property is home to raptors, ground nesting birds and a wide variety of wildlife. It features a mix of oak woodlands and open meadows, as well as the headwaters of the Matanzas Creek. Skiles and Wilroth properties are large parcels protected by District easements but portions have been donated or acquired to achieve a long-awaited public trail that will traverse the mountain. The first phase will begin in spring of 2007.
