Spectacular Saddle Mountain on the eastern boundary of Santa Rosa had development potential to be subdivided into 30 homesites. This stunning vista can be seen from Annadel State Park, Spring Lake and all of Rincon Valley. This regionally significant purchase protects 25% of the Mark West Creek watershed and a portion of Santa Rosa Creek in the Russian River Drainage Basin. Three creeks (Weeks, Alpine and Van Buren) feed into Mark West Creek, which is a critical salmon stream. One creek (Ducker) feeds into Santa Rosa Creek. Coho salmon and steelhead swim in Mark West Creek and steelhead are also found in Santa Rosa Creek. Through a State Coastal Conservancy grant, the District will develop a management plan that addresses the protection of a federally-listed endangered plant found on the property, as well as wildlife habitats, including the streams, and public access that allows for protection of the land’s natural resources. The District continues to coordinate with the community to develop recreational access that is compatible with preserving the conservation values of the property.
